How the day unfolds
Day 1: Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)
Enter the Afro-montane forest zone. Giant ferns, Rwenzori colobus, and the first taste of mountain mud.
Day 3: Bigo Hut (3,996m)
Cross the famous bog (bring gaiters!). Enter the otherworldly zone of giant lobelias and heathers. Surreal.
Day 5: Elena Hut (4,541m)
Above the clouds. Ice fields visible. Acclimatisation is critical. The air is thin but the views are divine.
Summit Day: Margherita (5,109m)
Pre-dawn start with crampons. Cross the glacier to the summit of Africa third-highest peak. Life-changing.
